Initial results of the CO-REACH Pilot Call in Social Science Research

On 10 December 2008 the full proposal submission phase in the CO-REACH Pilot call in social science research was closed. More than 80 Sino-European research networks submitted a full proposal. The aim of the CO-REACH pilot call is to stimulate joint research between Europe and China by supporting collaborative research initiatives in thematic areas in the social sciences and humanities. The pilot call invited proposals in the following thematic areas:

  • Demography, Family and Welfare
  • Cultural Heritage
  • Law, Governance and Policy Making
  • Participation, Co-determination, Employment and the Quality of Life
  • Labour Market Change, Migration and Social Cohesion

At present, the CO-REACH joint call secretariat is initiating the selection procedure, which will include a written peer review procedure. It is expected that the ranking of proposals will be finalised by the end of March 2009, after the meetings of the Selection Evaluation Committee and the Programme Steering Committee.

This multilateral Sino-European pilot call is jointly funded by 11 research funding organisations from 6 European countries and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences from China.

The call will support European and Chinese scientists to explore future scientific cooperation in the field of the social sciences and to undertake small research projects. Funds will be available for mobility, seminars and certain research costs for a period of two years, subject to national regulations.

The very promising results of the launch of this pilot call reveal the interest amongst European and Chinese researchers in developing joint research initiatives in the fields of social sciences and humanities. The outcomes of this pilot call will also be considered in developing future plans for the CO-REACH network after its initial lifetime, which will end in May 2010.
